Isaiah 1

Zion shall be redeemed with justice,
And her penitents with righteousness.
The destruction of transgressors and of sinners shall be together,
And those who forsake the LORD shall be consumed.

Isaiah 1:27-28

The first chapter of Isaiah starts by setting out the context for the book. The book is addressed to Judah and Jerusalem and written during the reigns of kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah.

Isaiah then moves straight into a prophecy for Judah that sets out the main themes of the book.

Isaiah prophesies judgment on Judah, particularly because they are neglecting social justice and mistreating the widows and fatherless. However, there is the hope of restoration after judgment.
