The Trauma Survival Guide Part 8: Trauma and Distorted Perceptions of Reality

In this video, I talk about a symptom of trauma that many people don’t know much about, and that causes a lot of fear when people suddenly find themselves experiencing it.

Stress and trauma can lead to a state of hypervigilance in which we are acutely aware of sounds and sights that we would not normally notice on a conscious level. During this state of heightened awareness, we can easily misinterpret the information coming in from our senses and find ourselves seeing and hearing things that are not really there, or misinterpreting things that are there and jumping to far-fetched and bizarre conclusions.

When we experience these distortions of reality, it is easy for us to fear that we are losing our minds and avoid telling anyone else because we believe that we will be judged and labelled.

But the truth is that misperceptions and misinterpretations of the world around us are very common responses to trauma, and that none of us are immune to these symptoms if we find ourselves under significant stress.

In this video, I also talk about the healing that is possible when we create safe and supportive relationships and communities where we can share our experiences and perceptions and help one another to stay grounded and to re-integrate.
